Small Acts of Love That Keep Couples Connected
Assalamu Alaikum,
This evening, I was walking through one of my favourite parks in London. It was quiet, the kind of quiet where your thoughts become louder than everything around you.
As I walked, I found myself thinking about something I had read earlier in the day. It spoke about couples who stay deeply connected, not through grand romantic gestures but through tiny, consistent acts of love. The kind of things you barely notice yourself doing yet somehow they shape the way your spouse feels every single day.
That’s when it struck me: sometimes the smallest things say the most.
Think about how many notifications your phone makes every day. Messages, emails, work calls and family chats – after a while, it all becomes background noise.
But what if your spouse had a ringtone that belonged only to them? There is something quietly beautiful about that. In the middle of a busy day filled with demands and distractions, that one sound says, “the person who matters most is calling or messaging you.”
It isn’t expensive. It isn’t flashy. It isn’t a surprise holiday or a bouquet of flowers. Yet every time it rings, it reminds you that someone holds a place in your life that nobody else can fill. Waa iga run!
The first time it happens while you’re out, you’ll know. Before you even reach for your phone, you’ll recognise who’s calling. There is something comforting about that kind of certainty.
Then I thought about something even simpler.
Most people save their spouse in their phone by their first name (except very few), perhaps with a heart emoji beside it. There’s nothing wrong with that. But imagine seeing “My Wife – nafta naftaydiii” or “My Husband – my protection” every time you opened your contacts.
It is such a small detail, yet every time you reach for your phone, you’re reminded that this isn’t just another person in your life. This is your companion, your responsibility, your greatest supporter and one of Allah’s blessings.
Some people might feel shy about doing this and that’s understandable. Not everyone is naturally expressive. But marriage isn’t about hiding how much someone means to you. It’s about appreciating them in ways that may seem small but carry lasting meaning.
Sometimes those little reminders are just as much for ourselves as they are for our spouse.
The more I reflected on it, the more I realised that these small acts matter because they are consistent.
They quietly say, “you matter to me.” Not once. Not only on anniversaries. Not only after an argument. But every single day.
When marriages begin to drift, it is rarely because of one major disagreement. More often, it happens because hundreds of little moments are missed. Small opportunities to show affection, appreciation and care slowly disappear.
The opposite is true as well.
The couples who remain close are not necessarily doing extraordinary things. More often than not, they are simply paying attention. They choose, day after day, to make one another feel seen.
A special ringtone. A thoughtful name in your contacts. A message during a busy afternoon. A sincere question about how their day has been.
None of these things cost money. None of them require grand planning. Yet together, they quietly build the foundation of a marriage that feels safe, valued and loved.
Sometimes the smallest gestures are the ones that hold us together.
