Before You Say Yes

Marriage is one of the biggest choices you will ever make, so it makes sense to want to be sure before you say YES. Islam gives you two simple tools for this moment: a heart that turns to God and eyes that stay open. You need both.

The first tool is a prayer called istikhara. It just means askin Allah for guidance. When you are not sure if something is right for you, you pray and ask Allah to make it easy and bless it if it is khair (good) for you and to keep it away from you if it will harm you. But istikhara is not a magic dream or a sign that suddenly appears. Most of the time you will not feel anything dramatic and that is normal. The answer usually comes slowly, through how things unfold: doors that open easily, doors that keep closing and the calm or worry you feel in your heart over time. The prayer works together with your own effort, not instead of it.

That is why you also have to pay attention to the signs in front of you. People show you who they really are before the wedding, if you are honest enough to notice. Watch how they treat their parents. Watch how they act when they are angry. Notice whether they are truthful in small things, and whether their “love” starts to feel like control. A person’s character is the foundation of everything, and you cannot build a happy life on a weak one.

So here is the main point. If you have prayed sincerely and you keep seeing clear warning signs in this person, do not talk yourself out of what you are seeing. That worry and those red flags are often the answer. God does not always reply with comfort; sometimes the kindest answer is the obstacle that saves you from years of regret. If the signs are bad and the peace never comes, walk away, and trust that what was taken from you was taken for your own good. The right person will bring you peace, and that peace is worth protecting from the wrong choice today.
