How My Grandmother Taught Me What Afifa Means

There’s something about Afifa (Cafiifa in Somali) that stops you mid conversation. When you hear it spoken especially the way a Somali mother calls her daughter or how a husband whispers it at home – you understand this isn’t just a name. It’s a feeling. It’s history wrapped in five syllables.

Afifa comes from the Arabic root ʿaffa (عفّ), which speaks to something profound: self-restraint, purity, dignity and the deliberate choice to avoid inappropriate behaviour. But it’s more than just a word. In Somalia or within the Somali communities worldwide, Afifa represents grace, elegance and virtue. It’s a quality that doesn’t shout for attention – it simply exists and the world stops to notice.

When parents choose Cafiifa for their daughter, they’re invoking centuries of meaning. They’re saying: I want my daughter to carry herself with dignity. I want her to be someone whose character speaks louder than words. I want her to understand that true strength comes from integrity.

The meaning of Cafiifa encompasses so much – subxanallah. It translates to chaste, pure, modest, virtuous and morally upright.

Somalis say:

• Cafiifo waa qof dhowrsan!
• Cafiifo Allaha kuu sahlo!
• Gabartaada Cafiifo Allaha kaaga dhigo!
• Cafiifo ayaan kuugu duceeyey in uu Illaahay ku siiyo and more.

These aren’t just poetic descriptions; they represent qualities that parents have long hoped to see in their daughters. In Islamic and Arabic cultures, this name is considered beautiful precisely because it reflects ideals of character that matter deeply like modesty, honour, good character and integrity woven together into a single word.

Back in the days; I learned about this from my grandmother, whose second name was Cafiifa. Whenever we talked about the name, she’d immediately say: “magacayga ka garo qofka aan ahay” – meaning: my name tells you who I am. She wasn’t someone who was limited by expectations. She could do everything. She could achieve everything. Because her name was Cafiifa/Afifa.

She used to say it with such pride: “dumarka wax baan dheerahay. Naag iyo bar baan ahay because Cafiifo baan u ahay.” And she believed this not in spite of her name but because of it. Her name was the foundation of her strength – Illaahay ha unxariisto.

When someone is described as Afifa, it’s not a casual comment. It’s a recognition of who they are at their core. To be Afifa means to carry yourself with dignity (ahaaw qof dhowrsan), to make choices guided by principle and to maintain respect for yourself and others. It’s the kind of character trait that shows in everything a person does – in how they speak, how they treat people and the decisions they make even when no one is watching. My grandmother embodied this every single day.

She’s the reason Cafiifa/Afifa is one of my most treasured names. Listening to her speak about what it meant to be Afifa, watching her live it – that changed everything for me.

In Somali homes, there’s a particular tenderness in how a husband says his wife’s name when she’s Cafiifa. It’s never just functional. In quiet moments, when he calls her from another room – there’s reverence in it. Cafiifa is soft enough to whisper, meaningful enough that whispering it feels like an act of love. There’s a beautiful Somali way where husbands make songs for their wives called Cafiifa:

Cafiifaay aduunyadan inta aan dul joogiyo

Nolashayda idilkeed

Intaan ubaxa caashaqa aan aayar soo guro

That’s what the name does to my people. It turns into poetry. Into devotion. Into love songs. But what makes Afifa stand out is that it carries history, spirituality and cultural weight all at once. Other names sound pretty. Afifa means something – wax baa ku dhex jira magacaan!

A young Afifa is bright and principled. A mature Afifa is elegant and wise. An elderly Afifa becomes legendary. It’s a name that ages beautifully because it’s rooted in something timeless.

In a world where naming sometimes feels like picking something that simply sounds nice or follows a trend, Afifa represents a different approach entirely.
